FROM FIRST RACE TO WORLD-CLASS COMPETITION

The Miami Slalom Open was created around a simple idea:
Build a place where every level of windsurfer can race.
The event combines international-level slalom competition with a strong grassroots development program, creating a pathway from a sailor’s first starting line all the way to PWA Youth competition.
For 2026, the program includes:
- PWA Youth World Tour — Fin & Foil
- Adult Open — Fin & Foil
- Freeride Fin
- Sport Fleet
- Cadet Fleet
Whether you’re chasing a championship or experiencing racing for the first time, there is a place for you on the starting line.

Today’s youth racers are tomorrow’s champions.
OPEN RACING
Competition isn’t only for the youth fleet.
The Miami Slalom Open welcomes adult racers with open equipment divisions designed for fast, competitive racing.
Adult Fin — Open
Open slalom racing with no equipment limitation.
Adult Foil — Open
Open foil slalom racing with no equipment limitation.
These divisions bring experienced racers together for high-speed competition on Biscayne Bay.
FREERIDE FIN
Competitive racing without requiring dedicated race equipment.
The Freeride Fin division is designed for sailors using no-camber sails, creating an accessible bridge between recreational windsurfing and full slalom competition.
It’s about racing hard, improving your skills, and enjoying competition without needing a complete professional race setup.
THE NEXT GENERATION STARTS HERE
One of the most important parts of the Miami Slalom Open is creating a genuine pathway into windsurfing competition.
For younger and developing sailors, TILLO International provides the equipment, allowing competitors to focus on learning, racing, and having fun.
CADET FLEET
Objective:
Introduce young sailors to racing while developing fundamental windsurfing skills and confidence.
Course:
Beach start → outside mark → jibe → return to the beach.
A simple format designed to teach the fundamentals of starting, reaching, turning, and finishing.
Equipment Provided:
- TILLO ONE boards
- TILLO Cadet 1.5
- TILLO Cadet 2.5
- TILLO Cadet 3.5
Fleet Rotation:
Up to 15 sailors at a time.

The emphasis is on participation, progression, confidence, and discovering the excitement of racing.
SPORT FLEET
The Sport Fleet is the next step for sailors ready for longer courses and more advanced racing.
Objective:
Develop stronger racing skills, improve tactical awareness, and introduce more technical maneuvers.
Course:
Beach start followed by an extended course — potentially including a triangle format depending on conditions — and finishing back at the beach.
Equipment:
- TILLO ONE boards
- Appropriate sail sizes based on sailor ability and conditions
The Sport Fleet creates the bridge between introductory racing and competitive slalom.
RACE FORMAT
The primary competition format will be Downwind Slalom.
Depending on conditions and fleet, courses may include approximately 2–5 jibes, with racing designed to finish near the beach whenever possible.
This format puts the action close to spectators while delivering the speed, tactical decisions, starts, mark rounding, and high-pressure jibes that define modern slalom racing.
Wind Minimums
Fin:
Minimum approximately 11 mph at the start.
A race may be abandoned if conditions no longer allow the leading competitor to remain consistently planing, in accordance with the Sailing Instructions.
Foil:
Minimum approximately 8 mph at the start.
A race may be abandoned if conditions no longer allow the leading competitor to maintain foiling conditions, in accordance with the Sailing Instructions.
Racing
A maximum of 10 races per class per day may be scheduled.
A minimum of 3 completed races is required to constitute a championship.
Starts, scoring, course procedures, and racing rules will be governed by the official Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions, together with the applicable World Sailing/PWA rules.
CLASSES
A minimum of five registered sailors may be required to constitute a class.

WHY MIAMI?
Miami offers something special for windsurfing.
Warm water, fall trade winds, a strong local watersports culture, and the protected waters surrounding Virginia Key create a unique environment for racing.
But the Miami Slalom Open is about more than conditions.
It’s about bringing together athletes, families, coaches, clubs, brands, volunteers, and the international windsurfing community around a shared passion for the sport.
It’s a place where a young sailor can watch an international-level race, rig a sail, enter the Cadet Fleet, cross a starting line — and begin imagining where the sport could take them.
MORE THAN A RACE
The Miami Slalom Open continues to build something bigger than a single competition.
It’s about creating opportunities for young sailors.
It’s about connecting local programs with the international windsurfing community.
It’s about giving recreational sailors a reason to race.
And it’s about helping the next generation discover the speed, freedom, competition, friendships, and lifelong passion that windsurfing can create.
From the first beach start to the PWA Youth World Tour, everyone shares the same water.
